Survival Guide > Jobs <<BACK

Canary Wharf viewFinding work in London is a big task, as per any other city in the world. Unlike in other countries, agencies here have a big say and will probably pay a huge part in you getting a job.

Usually most agencies post adverts in websites and newspapers, you then apply by sending your CV. In many occasions you have a pre-interview with them before you meet the company you want to work for.

Their screening is hard and most times is worth giving them a call after you send your CV to try speak with the agent. As they receive hundreds or thousands of CVs for each position, it is good to stand out showing your interest.

For simpler jobs in bars and hotels, you are better off enquiring directly at the place. Otherwise, join a temping agency.

AGENCIES

There are many agencies and it is good to register with a few. Specially the ones dedicated to your sector. Some are focussed in temporary work, some in contracting or permanent. Some are also specialised in languages, financial, teaching or nursing jobs. In their websites they also post jobs and help on how to build your CV and prepare for an interview.

Websites
The easiest way to look for a job is looking on the net. There are websites also specialised in the different sectors and you can register to receive daily updates on the job posts. Apart from looking in our own Job Section, these are the most popular sites:

Addecco
Blue Arrow
Brook Street
Career Legal
Hays
Jobserve
Kelly Services
LondonCareers
Monster
Manpower
Office Angels
Reed
Select
Staff Nurse

Link Suggestion

Hi there,

I've been looking through your site and as it provides information and links for jobseekers, I thought I'd suggest a link for a jobs website that you could put on your site:
http://www.allthetopbananas.com/

The good thing about AllTheTopBananas is that it works more like a search engine - the results are an index of companies' and agencies' own websites and therefore link directly to them for viewing of job details, so you can apply more directly with the agency or company you are interested in. This is great for jobseekers, as they can job hunt on multiple different sites with a single search.

The result is 200,000+ jobs all in one search!

You can search by region to get a more localised search to find the exact town or village you are hoping to work in. We also have a CV database for recruiters, and a jobs gadget which allows you to display, on your webpage, specific jobs that you or your users may be interested in.

We would appreciate it if you would take the time to have a look at our site and consider us for your webpage.

Thanks,
Sarah
