There are a surprising number of big name DIY stores across London and some not too far from Central London itself.  These include Wickes, B&Q, Homebase, and even Robert Dyas or Argos for tools and smaller items.  In the larger stores (not including Argos) you will also be able to buy indoor and outdoor plants.
