These are also known as GUM clinics. It is possible
to make an appointment at a GUM clinic without being referred by
your GP. Some GUM clinics have drop in times, when you don't need
to make an appointment. All information is confidential your GP
will not be contacted without your permission.
Services are free, open to everyone regardless
of age or sexual orientation, and usually include:
- Emergency contraception,
- Testing and treatment for STIs, and
- HIV testing and counselling.
When you arrive you will be asked to give your name and some contact
details. You do not have to give your real name or tell them your
GPs name.
You will see a nurse or a doctor depending on the reason you are
visiting the clinic. If you need to have any tests for STIs this
may involve giving a urine sample, a blood sample or having an internal
examination
Results for some tests can be given straight away. For others you
may have to wait several weeks. The clinic will ask for your permission
before phoning with your results, or they may send them in an unmarked
envelope. You may be asked to come into the clinic for your results
and to talk to one of the advisors.
